The Skeletal Age of the Elbow Joint of the Fourteen-year-old
Park Myung-Sik

Abstract
Roentgenological evaluation was done of the maturity state of the ossification centers of the elbow joint in fourteen-year-old normal Korean children, 60 boys and 60 girls respectively. The skeletal scoring system was adopted in classifying the various maturing phase of these epiphyses. The comparative study of each score was done, with the following results.
1. Of the six epiphyses, the girl showed 100% appearance in all. In boys, radial head, olecranon, capitellum and medial epicondyle showed 100% appearance. While the other two epiphyses, lateral epicondyle and trochlea, showed 98.3% appearance.
2. The skeletal score of the radial head was 7.65+1.02 for boys and 7.98+ 0.77 for girls, that of the olecranon was 2.95+0.90 for boys and 4.18+0.77 for girls, that of the capitellum 7.95+0.87 for boys and 8.63+0.58 for girls, that of the medial epicondyle 5.25+0.70 for boy and 5.85+0.68 for girls, that of the lateral epicondyle 2.71+1.05 for boys and 3.78+0.41 for girls, and that of the trochlea 3.18+0.74 for boys and 3.88+0.37 for girls. Those scores were consistently higher in girls than in boys.
3. Total skeletal maturity score was 29.87 for boys and 34.32 for girls, that of the girls being 4.45 higher than that of boys.
4. Total skeletal score in the fourteen-year-old children showed higher value by 9.17 for boys and 2.45 for girls, compared with that of the twelveyear-old ones.
This study maybe valuable in that it has provived a standard for evaluating the skeletal maturity of the fourteen-year-old normal korean children.
